kim, you so funny...

Oh Kim! Kim is quite a funny one sometimes. While Joe and I were playing around with random things (scarf turban) and joking, Kim thought she'd join in and showed us all her "mouse toy." Which she claimed she used to play as a child. It consisted of a white napkin being folded meticulously and then she would say "little mouse" (in Vietnamese) and jutted the thing forwards, pretending it could move on its own. She found it rather amusing, and so did we. The last picture is kind of blurry since I was laughing so hard. She's also a master of copying as you can see...

happy birthday Brian!
[journal]
So here are a few pictures of Brian's birthday dinner. He's 31 now, and to me, that seems kind of old. We went to this seafood restaurant, which was pretty cool, and I had lobster which was quite satisfying. I've got such a weakness for lobster... |

I Feel Like Party Tonight
[journal]
Tommy, who works in advertising, often gets invited to parties thrown by the "industry." So he invited me to the Strut magazine's two year anniversary where Juliette Lewis will be performing. Juliette Lewis along with fellow actors such as Jared Leto and Keanu Reeves has her own band. They are called (and this is not egotistical at all) Juliette Lewis and the Licks. Relying on the picture of her previous performance, wow, I'm really looking forward to a classy performance! You can view the promo for the party here HERE.

Respect the Gadget
[journal]
There's this mutual apathy my sister and I have for each other's obsessions. It's more of a negligent inattention than anything. She would sometimes want to borrow my Rio Carbon and ask, "Hey Joe, can I borrow your iPod?" "Oh-my-gawd, it's a Rio. A Rio! Not an iPod." "Yah sure. So like can I borrow your iPod?" "Fine." Yesterday she asked, "Hey can I borrow that music player?" Now it's a music player. Not even a proper noun with a title, but this generic music player description. "At least could you call it an mp3 player?" "M.P. like in Music Player eh? It's a player with music right? Music player." Then we both laughed for different reasons. I tried to make her understand by saying, "That's like me calling your Balenciaga, a white purse. Would you like it if I called it your white purse?" "Oh-my-gawd, it's a handbag. A hand bag! Not a purse." "Yah sure. Your purse.

Oi! The night before the cut...
[journal] It's the night before my first official cut at Sassoons. I had a hell of a time finding my models today. After I finished cutting Kal's hair (see below) at two, I met up with Susie and hit the Eaton Centre to model hunt. Most people seemed to think I was trying to sell them something, or scam them out of something or other. However, there were the odd few who were nice. By the end of two-three hours, I was so hungry and (as a result) grumpy since I hadn't eaten really (breakfast bar). By that time I'd gotten my sentences down pat. "Hi, my name is Karen. I work at Vidal Sassoon a salon in Yorkville. I was wondering if you would be interested in being my model for a haircut, it's completely free." And after I get that all out, if they haven't said no, or looked at me like I had blood all over my face or something equally weird and started to walk away slowly, I'd usually tell them what kind of cut I would do on them. BUT FUCK it took forEVER! Wonder how the two will go tomorrow. Am a bit excited and anxious to see how they'll go. This is Kal, she owns her own boutique in Yorkville. I actually walk by it every day to work. (Actually I run past it since I always seem to be late.) One day Susie and I walked into it and got into a good conversation with her. Needless to say, one thing lead to another.. and I told her I would cut her hair. It was really easy. She wanted the "messy Meg Ryan hair look." So, some layers here and there, a bit of scrunching and voila! I basically took out a lot of weight. Her hair had grown out quite a bit, and the last cut seemed all razored so her ends were all wispy and limp. Admittedly her fringe now looks a bit wiry, but I didn't have my blow dryer to make it perfect. (Should have brought mine, should have brought mine!) Her hair needs a dye job so badly, especially now that you can see through because of the layers I cut. I should probably read my notes now...

"the bob"
[journal]
I didn't think it would happen this fast but it did... My training starts this Monday! I'm super excited/anxious/nervous/happy!! There was this little point in time when I really thought my training would never start. But now it has, and the search for models begins! "hi, my name is Karen and..." oh goodness... This Monday I'll be doing my very first one length bob. I don't know how it will turn out, but I'm just worried it's going to suck like big time. First though, I have to find the model...

CLiP SOMEWHERE ELSE!
[journal]
Why is it that most of my pet peeves seem to stem from the good old red rocket? I don't get it. I swear, public transportation is full of weirdos. The amount of weirdos that are on the transit are greater the later the hours gets I've also noticed. I was coming home a few days ago on the subway when the most disgusting of habits unfolded before me and my friends' eyes. Sitting straight across from us was this skinny asian guy in his twenties (hence should have known better than to have done...) clipping madly away at his nails. We're not talking like one two clips for each nail, we're talking multiple clips here. Like machine gun fire. It was so disgusting! Kim was the first to notice and nudged me ever so slightly to look. I couldn't help but stare with the most disgusted look I could muster up, because fuck, it's gross! Like those things could go flying into your eye or something. Kim was laughing so hard because I couldn't/wouldn't stop staring. Just disgusting. Where is this world going to I ask...?

Japanese Fun
[link] I'm a little Japanese obsessed so when my friend sent me this link of a guy teaching with JET in Japan I decided to check it out. I've only read the first editorial, but it's so hilarious. I couldn't even finish before wanting to put up the link from my site. Here are a few snippets. I could not resist just putting up only one: You know, before we come to Japan, they tell us a lot of ultimately useless stuff. What kind of computer to bring, if our DVD's will work, clothing sizes, that kind of nonsense. Nowhere, and I mean nowhere, in the 3-4 months of orientations did anyone ever mention that at some point, a Japanese kid may try to stick their fingers up our butt. That's something I would have liked to know, personally. --------------------------------------------- During a quiz game, I asked "What's the name of the famous bridge in San Francisco?" They always guess "Rainbow Bridge" because that's the name of the famous bridge in Tokyo. Um, no. Not quite.
One boy completely surprised me though. He slowly and timidly approached me, looked up, and hit me with his guess - "Gay Bridge."
There's no way he could've said that.
I lean in closer and ask him to repeat it. Sure enough - "Gay Bridge." --------------------------------------------- One day after class, a ninensei girl walked up to me, and out of nowhere proudly exclaimed "Spread your legs!" Perhaps mistaking the look of shocked bewilderment on my face for misunderstanding, she stuck her chest out and repeated it even louder - "Spread your legs!"
She then produced a book of colloquial English expressions. Apparently. She'd taken the phrase from the police section...you know, "Get out of the car! Against the wall! Spread your legs!" She had just randomly selected "Spread your legs!" and decided to hit me with it one day.
But imagine one day a 14-yr old Japanese girl walks up to you and just shouts out "Spread your legs!" I had no idea how to react to that. If she'd whipped out a gun or a a samurai sword or even a small woodland animal I could have dealt with that, but "Spread your legs!" left me completely incapacitated.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the teacher leaned over and asked "Oh, is it correct?" I somehow pull myself back together and say no, it's not. Well, technically I suppose it is, but...just no. So then she asks "Why?" Oh Lord.
This was not in the job description. --------------------------------------------- Go HERE to read the rest.

turnover at sa$$oons
[journal] I've been working at the salon now for about three and a half months. It's only now after an apprentice who's been there for maybe a year has been fired that I start my training. I felt kind of bad that I'm benefiting from her misfortune... but all the same, I'm glad to begin the next phase of my apprenticeship. I think my training will start when we hire another apprentice to replace the last apprentice who was just fired. This means probably in about two weeks or so. Colour me excited! On a funny side note, we hired another apprentice maybe two weeks ago. He was one of the clients to the salon, and he was working as a model before he worked for us. His employment at our salon lasted one day. So this week, this new girl started... she's really great, and we'll see how she turns out.

Trip to VS
[journal]
I went to to Vidal Sassoon today to get my hair coloured. It was really fun. The picture to the left does not flatter the colour job. You can barely see the blue which is very noticable in real life. There's also a shadow behind my head that makes the back look like a mullet or I have bushel of hair. But I don't! It's very short. The day started when I tried to buy breakfast at Whole Foods. I was inside the supermarket and all the employees were looking at me. Every head would turn as I walked by and I was beginning to wonder if I was emitting some horrible odor or if my underwear was showing. Finally one lady, a grumpy sort of bitch with droopy eyes, gave me a disgusted look, and I asked meekly, "You're not open yet are you?" "No. How the hell did you get in?" she barked. "The front was open," I said, and I sort of left out the fact that I crouched under their steel grate that was partially open to get inside. I got to Vidal and they made me put on one of those body bibs. I thought it was like hospital garmet where the back is where you tie it, but this one was in the front. So I had it on backwards. Then I was wondering if I had to take all my clothes off too because the lady told me to go to the changeroom to do it. I was thinking, why would I need to go to the changeroom unless I was taking off all my clothes? But I decided to be on the safe side and for the sake of Karen's continued employment that I did not take off all my clothes underneath the plastic garmet. After a short wait (Karen brought me coffee, cookies and a bagel) I met my colourist. A fair skinned, fair haired girl, wispy and cute. She was Estonian and made jokes like "You know, like A-Stoner (in reference to Estonia)." She was afraid that my parents would kill her because she had worked on Karen's hair and she remembers how they reacted to that. After a lot of tin foil (I looked like I was ready for the oven), paint brushing, and burning heat (oh-the-heat), I came out with blonde and purplish colours. She was really surprised at the blonde and said that she was expecting a more gritty grey. The blonde was nice but we decided to do a cobalt blue. So she did a little more magic and I came out with a vibrant blue that should be seen in person. After that Karen continued to hook me up by getting Joseph, a stylist, to give me a quick trim. He looked at my hair and asked who had cut it before. I told him Karen and he was very surprised at how well she did (she hasn't begun her actual training yet). Everything was free because it was a creative cut but I wanted to give a big tip since it was so well done and the people were so nice. I joked that when I become a teacher I could hook my sister up with pencils and any blank paper I steal from the photocopy room.

43 things
[link] Go HERE for a website that gets you to make a list of 43 goals you want to reach. It is sort of a social networking site in a way because it connects you to all the other people with similiar goals and to people who have reached those goals and want to give some advice. I decided to add my list (which is at 9 things so far) on the right hand panel of this page.

Mid-Blink

I know I'm not crazy because there were close to 200,000 other people who visited this guy's site, unless of course all 200,000 of us are crazy. He posts still caps of celebrities in mid blink on his site. That's it. That is what he spends his time doing and that is all his site has. Go HERE. ps I refrained myself from posting the url to a site that is just like eBay except for one small difference. The merchandise they sell are the services of men and women: webcam, videos, phone sex, sms sex (yes, I didn't think there was a market in this), and I think real sex.

BUL KOGI? eat more KOREAN!
[journal]

I love Korean food, it is so amazing. Tonight I went out with Susie (one of my best friends) and had some Korean eats, and oh did we eat! Not only can you find amazingly tasty Korean food here, you can find it C-H-E-A-P!! (On a side note: Joe, I MUST bring you to this Korean restaurant! It's so good, and there are a million things you can choose from!) I can honestly say I would never have stopped for some kimchi chigae (it's a kimchi tofu stew-my fav korean dish) or dolsot bibim bap if it wasn't for my best friend Minho who happens to be half Korean. He's awesome, and because of him, I've been introduced to my favorite food. I love all foods, but I'm just hung up on this one. People say you should "always try new things" but why not try new things while enjoying the old? You can always enjoy everything, but for most things, I wouldn't be able to eat them every day... On the other hand, with Korean food, it's so good, light and tasty, I feel like I could have it every day. The little side dishes, the little portions, the meat, veggies, tofu, seasame, I could go on. I crave it every day, and if only I had a friend who wasn't embarrassed about always wanting to eat it, I would go with them every day.

Persian? YES!
[journal]
Again, here I am the procrastinator. This is a picture of my two good friends Ping (left), and Peggy (right) with the ever popular Joe maybe two weeks ago having one of the best meals we've had for a long time. All I gotta say is: PERSiAN food is awesome. Although in Toronto, it's somewhat difficult to find them in the downtown core. I'm just glad that I live in a city where you can have just about any type of food you want more or less, relatively cheap.

colour me travel?
[journal]
I suppose this is late in posting, but just wanted to mention that the parents as well as the oldest brother have been (since February 13th) in Vietnam. Hope that they are having a great time, and would have to imagine that they are enjoying the weather there. (Had a massive snow storm here last night, expecting more tonight..) Kim's been writing some random emails home which is nice, mostly of her daily life, consisting mostly of eating a whole lot and making traditional Vietnamese dresses (ao dai). Well, they're coming back in twelve days. "Happy travels" in any case. On another happy note: I have been able to get the 5th-15th off at work for my and Joe's trip to London! Granted, it's a few months away, but I've been compulsively searching for cheap accomodations and flights. (Joe has been making fun of me.) Would have to admit that I am quite the pirate when it comes to finding deals, and once that next pay cheque comes in, the airplane ticket will be in my hands. Am extremely excited, as me and my bro have not taken a trip together in six years. Should be fun. Now here's a bit of me whinning. As much as I love working where I am, I feel like I need a break. With the issues that constantly float through my head, I just need a break to relax, and do a bit of SHOPPiNG. What's not a better way to forget all your worries and troubles than a good week and a half of shopping? Needless to say, I'm esctatic as I've ever been.
