~*FESTEN*~

[journal] Since Joe has begun his obsession with possessing the most massive (and most impressive I might add) collection of movies (anime, foreign, blockbusters, classics, etc) I have been lucky enough to savour the fruits of his labour. I've always been a fan of "indie" movies, favouring them over the latest blockbuster. But even Joe said it himself, "even "indie" movies are getting to be a bit too "indie" nowadays." Yes Joe, I agree...
That IS, until we stumbled upon a foreign (Danish) JEM! Let me introduce you to Thomas Vinterberg's "Festen" otherwise known to us English speakers as The Celebration. This has to be one of my favorite films for so many reasons. I would definitely say one of my top five. The story itself is simple. It revolves around the 60th birthday celebration of Helge. It begins to get really interesting at the first toast.
All familes are fucked up. Anyone who thinks their family isn't fucked up is fucked up. I can't quite put my finger on how or what made this movie so real, but it was. The cinematography was so simple, and it really made me wonder why Hollywood depends so heavily on soundtracks and mood lighting. In any case, it was just so funny, (in a funny and in an odd way) how I could relate to so many of the characters.
Lets see Hollywood make a movie about pedophelia, racism, and molestation all in one.
